1 MILLION RAND

I’ve been asked many, many questions throughout my life and to be honest with you quite a few of them have left me speechless. One such question is: What would you do if you won the lotto and got 1 Million Rand?
Okay. First of all I would jump up and down reading the message telling me I had won a thousand times. Oh and I wouldn’t be able to stop smiling. Then and only then, would I think ahead and figure out what I would do with all of that money.
Just because I’m a good girl I would put half of it in the bank account and hope that it would grow. I definitely wouldn’t put all of it in, though I would limit the amount of things I spent my money on to, let’s say, 5.

1

The very first thing I would do would be to book a meal for my family to celebrate. But not just anywhere. Instead of booking at a normal restaurant I would choose to have it in Oslo, Norway at night so we can see the northern lights. I’ve been hoping that one day I would see them since I saw a photograph of this amazing natural wonder in a magazine three years ago. With this money I’ll have a chance to see them and as an advantage I’ll have my whole family with me.

2

With the celebration part done I would turn my attention to something I’ve always wanted. I’d hire someone to make my bookcase into the door to a secret passage which leads to my very own theatre. Goodbye days of standing in queues to get tickets for movies. Some people may think this is something that’s only done in the movies, but as the famous statement goes: “If there’s a will there’s a way”.

3

Many people don’t know this about me but I would love to go skydiving. But not by myself of course, so to first of all find a professional who tandem skydive, as well as a scenic place to do it for some great views. I can already imagine the feeling of the wind tugging at my hair as I fell through the air.

4

So the fourth thing I would spend my money on would be on a trip to the Kruger National Park. There I could donate money to people who are working to save not only the African Unicorns but also all of the other bush animals that are being targeted by poachers. That would be really awesome, I’d post the pics I would take on my blog and send them to my friends; helping to promote the plight of these animals.

5

Just because I am a practical thinker (most of the time) I would make sure that I had some money in a fund that would be enough to pay for my sister’s and my university education. Also money for a few fun holidays because life can’t be all work and no play!
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WON A MILLION RAND??????

THE BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD

This is something I’ve been thinking about for a while but everyone seems to have different ideas. Personally here are a few of the places that I find most inspiring and make it in my top few best places in the world.

  •   Paris, France
  •    New York City, United States of America
  •  London, United Kingdom
  •  Rome, Italy
  •   Barcelona, Spain

Just to name a few. Having being luckily enough to have been to all of these places I’d like to share just why each of them could be the best place in the world.

Paris

This is a place that is very scenic. There are a number of amazing buildings and structures that people are dying to photograph such as The Eiffel Tower and The Palace of Versailles. The serene view from the top of the Eiffel Tower showed me not only the view of the city but also the variety of colours that I could see.
There were the grey roofs of the houses which look so posh. According to (http://www.empower-yourself-with-color-psychology.com) this colour creates calm and steady sense in a chaotic world which is very appropriate in this busy city.
Another colour that I realized was very prominent in Paris was green. Green I found was a sense of balance and harmony which is appropriate since it calms the city’s inhabitants down and makes them more likely to live a friendly life.

New York City

Almost everyone knows about the New York Skyline because it’s so spectacular but what some people don’t know is that according to (http://www.timeout.com) this is the very place that toilet paper, Scrabble, gelatine and the air-conditioner were developed.
So moving onto the colours we can think about here I’ve picked yellow and black. The yellow because of the famous taxis there and the black for the darkness because we all know that if we didn’t have the darkness of the shadows or the night the famous Skyline would not be the same.
The really cool thing about the colour yellow is that it inspires new ideas which links to the inventions that I’ve already mentioned. It’s funny how such simple things like colours affect us subconsciously.
After a bit of research I learnt that black is not just a colour that is mysterious but also one that shows power and authority.

London

Many people love London, so many that this city was given the title of The World’s Best City. When I first heard this I couldn’t help but wonder why they had gotten it though in the end I realized some important facts. First of all like Paris, London has magical gardens which are places you can relax or exercise. This is also the place with the Big Ben, The London Eye, Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abby. For those people who are having getting trouble getting around there are the busses, tubes, taxis and even bicycles.
As for the colours I think gold is pretty prominent so I’ve found out a few facts about this colour. Gold is the colour of success, achievement and triumph. All three things show the Londoners pride in their city and so are easily found if you go to the right places.
Next would be red. This colour is the first in my mind when I think of London because of the famous buses. In case you didn’t know red is the colour that can give you confidence and make you determined and ready to take action.

Rome

This is a city filled with history and the lovely smells of Italian food. If you haven’t been there I suggest you go to the following places. The Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and the Panthenon. When you get peckish you should definitely grab a pizza and enjoy a gelato.
The colour that I think is important to Rome is brown. Don’t doubt me before I explain.
Brown is a colour that is solid with strength and maturity. As all of the historic buildings have been able to stay in such perfect condition without falling over we know that they are strong and thus possess strength. These buildings and all of the other parts of Ancient Rome have been there for years and thus are mature.

Barcelona

The first thing that appears in my mind when I think about Barcelona is the Magic Fountains that we watched one night. If you haven’t yet seen them then it’s a reason for you to book your flight immediately. But this amazing city is not just loved for that but rather many, many reasons such as the lovely markets, the warm ocean water, the artwork as well as the Churches and statues.
Personally I think the colour that best suits this Spanish city is orange. Even though this place isn’t flooded with orange it seems to be the colour that catches the city’s warmth and happiness. When I remember my holiday in this country I know that it was a place that was filled with spontaneity as well as the seeking of an adventure.

All this cities have great personality and taught me that beauty reveals itself in so many different ways.

A little story

For this week's post I want to do something a bit different. I want to tell you something that will hopefully give you the faith to follow your own dreams:

There was once a girl who loved to read. Even though she went to school and still did sport she would squeeze in a few pages when ever she could. One day that little girl was asked what she wanted to do when she was older and she replied that she wanted to be a person who told stories for other people to read.
Right then at the age of 9 she began to write. She would write about fairies, her friends and anything else that inspired her. Her family, friends and teachers encouraged her to share her ideas with the world though no one ever thought that much would come from her words.
In the six years to come she spent more and more time writing, perfecting her talent. Along the way she faced many obstacles and got knocked down more than once, still she got back up again even more determined to show the world what she could do.
After many hours of work that little girl shocked those who had doubted her and reached her dream in publishing a book for any child to read.

For those of you who are chasing your dreams I hope you believe that you can do anything because as long as you are willing and determined you are unbeatable.

For those of you who have given up your dreams I hope this story helped you to re-ignite it because the story is true. Anything is possible. I should know, because that little girl is me <3.

"Time Escapes Me"

For those of you who have read my ‘About Me’ page on my blog or know me personally, you’ll know that I’m a teenager who does some creative things, such as blogging for Nikela, writing books and fanfics as well as other outside of school things.
When I’m doing all of these things on top of my schoolwork “Time Escapes Me”, but all of these things are what I love doing and as a result they shape the person I am today.
The main reason I manage to get through all of it is because I have an amazing family, really awesome friends as well as my super supportive fans.

I know this was a short blog today but I thought it was cute since “Time Escapes Me” is the name of the fanfics that I wrote about One Direction (for those of you who are fashionistas you can even check out the fashion links to see what Kayla is wearing thanks to Celine Cooper).
Check out my Fan Fiction page :)

When The Last Rhino Is Poached

Hey guys, this was my entry for the wildseas.org World Rhino Day Short Story Competition which I came 2nd in :)

I know it's a little long but I think you'll enjoy it <3

‘Wake up, angel.’ My mother whispered shaking me.
Without even needing to turn on the lights I knew there were tear streaks running down her cheeks. Deep sadness made her voice quiver when she spoke again. ‘Get dressed. We’re going for a drive.’
Only one quarter awake I pulled myself out of bed, and fumbled in my closet for some clothes. It would have been easier if I had turned my light on but I had sensed that this was an urgent situation so I didn’t want to waste a second.
‘Lara!’ My dad called to me over the sound of the running car engine.
I heard how panicked he was and knew that this wasn’t a prank but a real emergency. Throwing my t-shirt over my head I grabbed my phone and sprinted out of my room and out of the house.
‘Sorry to stress you out darling but your mother got a phone call from your uncle.’ My dad whispered as he drove through the suburb heading for the highway that could take us to many places.
I knew this area so well considering I had only moved here three years ago. That was the horrible part of being the only daughter of two serious conservationists, you moved wherever, whenever to be close to your parents’ work. Sometimes I blamed my ranger uncle for getting the whole family so involved in the rhino’s plight but other times I was grateful that I could be a part of something that was really important.
‘What did uncle say? Is he okay? Is Rue okay?’ Every time I said the young white rhinoceros’s name I swelled with pride because when she was a baby I had been the one to name her. Even now when I heard of things going wrong in the rhino protection area I remembered clearly the first day I had met the poor orphan rhino. She was among the last fifty white rhinos still alive then, but so much had changed now.
‘Darling do you remember last summer when your uncle removed Rue’s horn to keep her safe.’
I nodded my head as I watched her rub sunscreen onto her face. If she was already applying it she obviously thought we’d be spending a lot of time in the sun today.
‘Do you remember that day when I told you that a poacher could still come after her even if she had the smallest fragment of horn?’
My heart felt like it had been forced onto a treadmill at full speed in the middle of the night. ‘Is she dead?’ I whispered so quietly that I didn’t even know if my mother would hear me.
I waited for a minute in silence when my dad stopped the car and stared at my mom wondering just what they should tell me and who was going to have to reveal it to me.
‘Lara, we know how much Rue means to you and to all of us but there’s not much we can do now.’
‘Is she dead?’ I screamed the question at my parents wanting to know the answer no matter how painful it was going to be. I had to know. I had to be able to prepare myself for what I would be seeing when we arrived in the top security area.
To my surprise my dad sighed and reaching for my hand he gave me a weak smile which I could just make out in the darkness. ‘She’s not dead but …’
I finished off his sentence for him already guessing the meaning. ‘She was poached and is now fighting for her life because of it.’
Slowly I understood why we were rushing at a time like this. If Rue had died we would have had time preparing ourselves for what we would see but now since she was alive and suffering, every second counted.
My dad gave my hand a quick squeeze before speeding back onto the highway. I understood now why they looked both sad and anxious, we were on our way to say goodbye to the last rhino.
I sat there staring at the picture of Rue on my phone scared and confused by so many unanswered questions that demanded attention in my mind. In order to try and dismiss them I started reciting the facts that I knew:
Rue was a white rhino. She was three and a half years old. She had been orphaned when her mother was killed by poachers. When the last black rhino died and only thirty white rhinos remained on earth the conservationists started to go to extreme measures to protect them. During this process Rue was placed in a cornered off area of the Kruger National Park and was given special guards and rangers (one of which was my uncle). One week ago we found out that she was the last rhino left alive which meant her security protocol was increased, yet somehow last night she was poached.
But even after sieving through the important information that I knew I still did not understand how a poacher could get through all of Rue’s protection and get to her. More importantly, why were their so few cars speeding on the highway? Surely more of the media should be on their way to document this sad occasion. Surely there should have been a whole police squadron speeding towards the park ready to track down the poachers.
‘We’re here.’ My dad mumbled as he pulled into the entrance of her area.
‘This is not the right time for visitors, sir.’ The one guard told us just as we heard a male’s voice boom from inside the guard’s room.
Without even asking my parents for permission I got out of the car and pushed past all of the shocked guards until I could see my uncle towering over everyone and ordering the men to remain calm.
Uncle Jeremy.’ I called poking him the way I used to do when I was five. ‘I NEED to see her!
The minute my uncle saw me he realized my eyes were begging him while my voice was stiff and clear, he excused himself from the meeting.
Returning to my parents I knew they were angry that I had run off but they didn’t have time to show it because they noticed my uncle standing next to me with blood on his khaki shirt. ‘Hi J, you need to tell us what happened, what's the plan now?'
My mother said locking gazes with her brother. She had a way with getting what she wanted and right now all three of us needed to know.
‘I can’t tell you yet, but I need you to grab your veterinary tools so we can tend to Rue first, I’m afraid she’s not going to make it.’
With the car’s lights shining on him I could see just how stressed and tired he looked. The bags underneath his eyes showed the seriousness of the situation. ‘What happened to your team of vets?’ I asked as we started walking through the bush to where her body lay.
‘They fled once they had the horn. Only then did we realize they had been selling all her other pieces of horn that we had gained through the dehorning process.'
I wished he would say that at least they hadn’t killed her, but I realized that with all her suffering it would have been better for Rue if they had.
The minute I saw her injured body I closed my eyes and forced myself to breathe before kneeling down and gently stroking her skin the way I had always done when I visited her. ‘Everything’s going to be okay Rue.’ I felt bad for lying to a dying animal but I knew she couldn’t understand me, it felt like the right thing to say, so I sent her love through my words and touch.
Everyone was silent whilst my mom worked along with some other local vets to stabilise Rue’s condition, but before they could deliver the verdict I knew I couldn’t handle it. I didn’t want to stand by and watch her die.
Getting up I ran deeper into the dark bush wanting to wake up from this nightmare but knowing it was impossible. I was here now and this was real. Rue was dying and I had to do something about it. I wasn’t a trained vet or a ranger or even a proper conservationist. I was just a teenage girl who had worked so hard to save a vulnerable species.
I racked my brain for something I could do before I realized I had the answer the whole time. If the media wasn’t here to show the world just how horrid poaching could be I was going to do it myself. I was going to turn Rue into an icon that would remind the world forever what happened if human beings did not control their greed.
Grabbing my cellphone out of my pocket I turned it onto video camera mode and whispered my first video blog entry: 'Around the world some of you are sleeping and some of you are awake, but whatever time-zone you’re in there is some shocking news that you’re all about to hear. The incident will be a blow to my country South Africa, and to the rest of the world. For those of you who did not support the rhino cause you will feel guilty, whilst those who did are going to wish they had done more! In the last twenty-four hours the worst alternative possible has occurred. Something no-one ever thought they would face, an entire species is one whole step closer to becoming extinct.’
Regaining my courage I walked back to where Rue lay and pointed the camera at her and the people working so hard to help her. ‘But I’m not going to spend the next few days mourning her death because it hasn’t happened yet. I am going to spend the next few days making sure that every single person on this planet knows what’s going on. I’m going to do my best making sure the rest of the world wakes up from being ignorant and takes a stand. We cannot forget the mistakes of the past but we need to spend every ounce of our energy making sure that this Rhino stays alive for the next generation to see.’
As I turned the camera off I heard the sound of three helicopters coming closer to where we were. Listening even more carefully I heard police sirens and the sounds of cameramen snapping the pictures that would be all over the news in only a few hours.
In spite of the situation I found myself praying silently as I posted my video blog on the internet, crossing my fingers and hoping that it would help us get the right amount of support and prayers to make sure that Rue survived tonight. For even though the last rhino was poached; we cannot stop fighting against extinction because it is a shadow that will never stop haunting the animals left on earth.

Time to be a Spy

Some people say creative writing is challenging. I agree because we’re not all superheroes (though I’m not going to give up wishing). But there is a way to make creative writing easier through spy training.

I’m not referring to completing obstacle courses, disguises and building rafts. I’m referring to the sharpening of your five senses. This is easier said than done but here is a way to practice:

Go and sit in a cafĂ© or restaurant and watch the people around you (sight), take note of their body language, for example do they keep fidgeting or tugging their ears. If you’re feeling nosy you can listen to what they order or just the many sounds around you (hearing). Whilst you wait for your food or drink you can feel (touch) the table and chair, are they hard and cold or soft and comfortable? When your food and or drink comes you can first smell it (smell) and then eat it (taste).

Using your five senses makes writing so much more fascinating to read and it helps you to get into the writing as well. Plus practicing your spy skills will make sure you’re ready to help when someone needs saving from an evil villain.

Holidays, Notebooks and Chocolate

These are the three main things you need to write a book. Of course you need the tools still, e.g. a laptop, but these are the things that actually help you to come up with all of your ideas and eventually the plot.

Holidays:
This is the time where you can relax and just watch the world go by or do something that you've always wanted to do. Whatever you chose to do it will help you find inspiration in one way or another because often this is the time where you can let your mind go and ponder different things. Here the old saying~ Stop and smell the roses~ applies.

When you have the initial idea this is when you have time to consider what kind of characters you would like to use, where the story is going to be set and most importantly what is going to happen in your story.

Notebooks:
Personally, I love notebooks. I have so many for different reasons because I find that they are a lovely place for me to scribble my ideas in, before I forget them and they are where I organize the plot and figure out the characteristics of each character.

Imagine lying in bed in the dark just thinking. All of a sudden you come up with an amazing idea but you don't have anywhere to write it down so you try and remember it. By morning you've already forgotten your wonderful idea. You can spend hours trying to remember what it was only to get a headache and be forced to give up. This is why notebooks are so important.

Notebooks can also be a great place to write little notes about things at  you have experienced recently and activities that you've done (this helps when one of your characters are in a similar situation because you will be able to understand it better) . Also it is a place where you can write down anything you observed hat catches your eye.

Chocolate:
Okay well, chocolate helps because chocolate is chocolate. Someone once told me that there is something in chocolate that makes you feel happy and I totally agree with the person. Chocolate makes you feel warm inside and personally, I find it easier to write when I'm happy so chocolate is definitely important.

If for some strange reason you don't like chocolate, then there are so many other ways to feel inspired and happy which makes your writing better.

Just remember:
