You thought this was about wrapping
presents didn’t you :p – well it’s not, it's the end of the Flash Fiction.
I opened the note and read it:
We know who
you are. we know what you have to lose, so if you value your life you’ll do as we
say: leave the crowd and enter the first alley you see. If anyone follows you
they die. We need you, and you alone to assist the resistance.
I didn’t
move because I wasn’t sure if this was a prank. I was ordinary, well as
ordinary as you could be in the society I lived in. My hair was brown and my eyes
were green. I wasn’t extremely clever and nor was I very athletic. All in all,
there wasn’t anything about me that could make me seem different. So why me?
Why couldn’t they target someone else? What had I done to deserve this?
Someone
shoved me backwards forcing me toward the back of the crowd. This was my chance
to leave. I could either go home and wait to be evicted or I could go down a
scary alley and figure out who sent me the letter. I'd always been curious
about the world around me yet my logic won my debate. I would go to my new home
and forget everything. I’d forget about Ty. I’d forget that my studies were all
a waste and I’d focus on the fact that it was my birthday. I might even use the
extra food rations I’d been saving to get a slice of cake; if they hadn’t shut
down the cafeteria.
Just as I was
jogging down the road someone jumped in my way. ‘Where are you going?’ The
ragged boy asked grabbing my wrists attempting to get me to stay in one place.
It didn’t work. I kicked him in the thigh and punched his jaw. That was before I
saw three men leave their hiding places and walk towards us. There was no way I
could fight them; even if I could, the gold triangles on their arms told me that
more resistors would assist them if they needed it.
Though the
police weren’t far away from us the resistance troupes picked me up and carried
me down an alley where a lady with white hair spoke to me. ‘Hello Casey. Welcome
to the resistance. You probably know that we’re powerful, yet what you may not
know is that one of our important members, Ty, has been taken captive and his
trial will be next week. Since he chose you to be his apprentice he must’ve
known that you were capable of helping him with his machine. We need you to
finish off the machine so we can use it to rescue him. When you’ve done that we’ll
release your brother.’
The very second she finished I caught sight of a
small boy with brown hair and many freckles. No! They had him. They had Tim. My
mind raced to how scared my younger brother must be and immediately all my
thoughts of fleeing died down. I would do it. I would finish the machine. I
didn’t know how I would do it considering all of our workplaces were being shut down but I'd find a way. My brother had to get away from these
madmen and I was going to make sure that happened
